The temples where Indian women have always offered their hair — and what changes when nothing in that chain is acid-stripped, machine-bonded, or blended.
There is a word the temple priests use for what happens when a woman lays her hair on the marble steps at Tirumala. It is not a word for sale, or surrender, or sacrifice. It is केशदान — hair-gift.
For two thousand years that gift has funded hospitals, midday meals, the rebuilding of gopurams. It has been counted in tonnes, audited at quarterly auctions, and shipped — too often — to factories that strip it of the very thing that made it worth gathering.
